In 2006, Tim Leaton's one-minute trailer, "Orphans in Africa," won the grand prize of the nation-wide "Film Your Issue" competition, an "issue film" contest advertised in USA Today for 30-to-60 second films open to all 18 to 26-year-old U.S. residents. The winners were determined by a 50-50 public-jury vote. The public cast their votes online at MSNBC.COM, which drew a record breaking 88,638 responses, leaping past the 61,598 votes for the MSNBC.COM poll for best Super Bowl ad. The illustrious jury included George Clooney, Walter Cronkite, the Dali Lama, Brian Williams, the Mayor of LA, and Senator Obama, among others. Leaton presented his film at the awards ceremony at the United Nations in June of '06.He then completed a paid internship at Walt Disney's movie studios in LA, as the grand prize.In May of 2007, he graduated from Virginia Tech and moved to the west coast. He now resides in Glendale, and is working in Beverly Hills.
